PenAfrica was an Original Idea for Development at the African Leadership Academy (ALA) under their Entrepreneurial Leadership curriculum. It was founded by three students; Hayat Mohammed Seid from Ethiopia, Priscilla Takondwa Semphere From Malawi, and Alexia Fadzai Paradzai from Zimbabwe. The three of us conceptualized the organization out of our shared passion for storytelling. Additionally, we were inspired by the diverse ALA student body to leverage storytelling to showcase and celebrate Africa’s rich cultures in ways that are relevant to a young audience today.
For a year,we worked on the idea with an additional member, Ngor Majak from South Sudan, and since graduating from the Academy in 2013, Hayat and Priscilla have taken PenAfrica into the real world by beginning work on our flagship project, The Ekari Book Series.
